Organizational Development Training


NGOs can receive either all or a combination of the following 10 components according to their specific needs:

  • NGO roles and responsibilities;

  • NGO Board of Directors

  • Strategic Planning; Organizational And Community Needs Assessment;

  • NGO internal operating systems and policies and procedures;

  • Employee Performance Evaluation

  • Monitoring and Evaluation, Reporting

  • Public Relations and work with media

  • Fundraising

  • Financial Management

  • Communication and Team Building

 Objectives: 

  1. Participants understand roles of NGOs in society, including watchdog role over government.

  2. Participants understand International standards of NGO’s.

  3. Participants understand roles and responsibilities of the BoD as governance body, relationships between board and executive staff.

  4. Participants assess organization’s internal and external environment.

  5. Understand the Strategic planning process and develop strategic plan including Mission, Vision, Programs and management goals and objectives.

  6. Participants are ready to implement completed drafts of policies and procedures and positions descriptions.

  7. Participants understand how to develop indicators for measuring advocacy project impact.

  8. Participants have developed diversified fundraising plans contributing to their sustainability after FONDAS funding.

  9. According to pre- post- evaluation data, institutional capacity of participants is improved from pre-training levels, as shown by pre- post- evaluation data.

 

 

Advocacy Skills Training  

FONDAS’ comprehensive advocacy curriculum will assist participants in establishing and clearly defining realistic advocacy objectives consistent with community needs, as well as their broader organizational missions and implementation capacity. These trainings will also offer an introduction to the skills required to communicate advocacy objectives to their members and the broader public; to develop the interpersonal, negotiation, and other skills necessary for effective collaboration; to mobilize support for their initiatives across sectors; and to support and sustain meaningful dialogue with policymakers.

Conducted by FONDAS staff, the advocacy topics include:

    ·     Module I: Basic Advocacy Skills
    ·     Module II: Government/Business Relations
    ·     Module III: Public and Community Relations

 Objectives:

  1. NGO representatives are trained on basic advocacy skills and effective implementation of advocacy programs.

  2. Participants are able to draft community needs assessment surveys, develop advocacy messages, and communicate advocacy objectives to constituents and the broader public.

  3. Participants address the benefits and the mechanics of networking, coalition-building, and joint activities.

  4. Participants develop interpersonal and negotiation skills required for collaboration with government and business sectors.

  5. Participants are able to identify and develop issues into concrete plans for advocacy actions.

  6. Participants understand the role of NGOs in advocacy, including acting as watchdogs over government action.

  7. Upon the completion of each module, attendees will receive a certificate signifying their participation.

Board of Directors Training

NGOs may request training in a five-day retreat format that addresses the roles and responsibilities of members of a Board of Directors. During the retreat, technical assistance is provided to assist a board to develop by-laws and structures. Highlights of this technical assistance include: 

  •  Development of board policies and procedures to implement by-laws

  • Formation of board committees;

  • Electing board officers;

  • Review of the strategic plan including short- and mid-term goals and objectives.

Leadership Training


NGOs can request to participate in a three-day Leadership training conducted by FONDAS staff. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Leadership Characteristics & Practices

  • Performance Coaching & Situational Leadership

  • Motivation

  • Decision Making

  • Delegation

  • Team Building

  Objectives:

  1. Understand main leadership styles

  2. Understand leadership, decision making and problem solving practices

  3. Increasing leadership and management skills

  4.  Contributing to more effective management

Financial Management Training

Composed of one module, this training provides NGOs with greater technical skills in the areas of:  

  • Developing a Budget

  • Monitoring Expenditures

  • Reporting to Donors

  Objectives: 

  1.  NGO participants understand basics of budget development.

  2. NGOs have greater understanding of developing budgets, financial controls, and monitoring expenditures.

  3.   NGOs have greater understanding of developing specialized budgets and developing strong reporting mechanisms

Gender Sensitization Training  

Offered upon request, this training includes topics such as:

  • Meaning of gender / Gender versus Sex

  • Gender stereotypes

  • Gender roles

  • Gender and society

  • Accounting for Gender in advocacy planning

  Objectives:  

  1. Participants develop a basic understanding of the concept of gender, become sensitive to obstacles that women face in increasing their representation in community affairs, and create action plans for assessing the impact that their project has on gender.

  2. Trainers increase their sensitivity to gender as an issue in advocacy and public participation.

NGO-Government Training  

The New Business Development training assists NGOs to increase their future long-term financial sustainability through accessing more varied sources of funding, by identifying income generation opportunities, and by improving the organization’s competitiveness as applicants to various donors.

Objectives:

  1. NGOs learn about the requirements of donors, and learn how to design effective program and cost proposals to respond to donor priorities.

  2. NGOs understand the various ways in which NGOs can generate income through fee-based services.

  3. NGOs develop proposals and supporting documentation such as resumes of key staff, logical framework, budget plans, and descriptions of past experience, with assistance from FONDAS staff.

New Business Development Training

One-day new business development trainings will be offered to current MAP grantees and other NGOs from the wider NGO community on a monthly basis from late June 2004 onwards. New business development training will assist both our current NGO partners and other NGOs in the community to increase their future long-term financial sustainability through accessing a more varied funding source base, through identifying income generation opportunities, and through improving their competitiveness as applicants to other donors.

Watchdog Training 101

FONDAS offers interested NGOs a basic training package on skills required to conduct effective watchdog activities, including identification of the target area (legislation that is not being adequately enforced), formation of loose NGO coalitions, understanding the importance of watchdog functions, media and public outreach, and watchdog methodologies.
